Did you know? - The truth about Spain

Did you know that red and yellow of the Spanish flag, symbolize blood and gold?

I have been all the week thinking about what I should write in my “Did you know”.

In the first place, I thought to write some real epic history that happen in the past, like “Numancia” or the “Battle of Lepanto”.

We have a lot of history, and is really easy to find a lot of real stories like that about Spain in internet, so finally I eliminated the idea.

After that, I think about telling you that the Spanish people usually don’t like his country. We think that we are a really bad country, and that we are useless in the world. But at the same time, we are proud of being Spanish, and we love our country, our food, our land, our people, our city… Is strange, right?

Just then, it occurred to me to write a lot of strange and curious things about Spain. For example:

  1. The oldest city in Europe is Cadiz, Spain. Settled by Phoenicians.
  1. Spain have more than 8000km of beach.
  1. Spain is the only country in Europe that produce bananas.
  1. The 80% of the Spanish people have his own house, we are not use to rent.
  1. Different ethnic groups have settled in Spain throughout history, including Iberians, Celts, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths and Moors.

But later I said, “they will think that the only think I can talk about Spain are stupid thinks” and I begin to search interesting topics. Like talking about our bad situation in politics, where the new parties, and old, are unable to agree with each other to govern. Or for example talking about how works our health system, one of the best of the world. Or maybe, explain that Spain have a problem with the education, we are one of the countries with the highest school dropout and rates of youth unemployment.

But I thought quickly “that sounds boring” and I try to find fast an entertainment topic to talk about.

Sports for example, with Nadal, Gasol, Iniesta… or maybe art with Dahlí and Picasso. Perhaps literature, talking about Cervantes, Unamuno or Lorca. Or go to my topic, cinema, and show you one of the most important films in the history of cinema, “Un perro Andaluz” by Buñuel.

And then, I realized the passion I was getting in trying to describe you my country. Trying to find the perfect topic, where the people say “Wow, amazing”. And just then, I say, that’s it, I will talk about something people don’t know. “How really Spain Is”. So here we go:

Did you know? Spain is made of people that love his country without knowing it. A country with a lot of history, that some of its habitants don’t know, because of our bad education.

Despite this, our police and health are one of the best in the world. We love to be with other people, although almost we never trust in anyone. And we are really good in Sports and Arts. Normally, is the only thing which can make us proud of our country.

And by the way, all the people say that we always talk VERY HIGH andtoofast, and that we are very brave and pranksters, so comment this post, and share it, or tomorrow, you will have a Spanish person singing the “Macarena” at 4 in the morning.

Thank you for reading, I hope you like it!
